This one is so insistently self-reflexive that watching it is just like watching a snake eating itself--it is interesting to look at for a while but there is nothing left to hold onto once it finishes its mildly nauseating task. Like its predecessors, "Scream 4" replaces the values of storytelling and suspense using the worth of finding yourself in about the joke. Unfortunately, in the 11 years since "Scream 3," the joke has gotten pretty old.
Bad Williamson and Craven are just half thinking about pursuing them. The screenplay does its duty by referencing the "Saw" movies, iPhone apps that may make you sound like Ghostface. Then it does nothing together, preferring just to walk using it . old routine as before, only more tiredly. A couple scenes feel the motions of attempting to recapture the "scary movie trivia" magic of the original film, but anybody's heart is in it.
